Four Basic Types of Formative Assessments

What is the difference between formative and summative assessment? How can accurate formative assessment information be used to shape the instructional process? Why does formative assessment matter? These are but a few of the questions answered in this professional development session. In addition, many examples of the 4 basic types of formative assessments will be given, including:
· Oral strategies to Check for Understanding (e.g. Value Lineups; Think - Pair - Share; Misconception Analysis and Whip Around).
· Questioning strategies to Check for Understanding (e.g. Effective Questioning Techniques; Providing Nonverbal Support; Using Question stems; Practices that Promote Student Participation {Response cards; Hand signals; ReQuest}.
· Using Writing to Check for Understanding (e.g. Interactive Writing; Read-Write-Pair-Share; Summary Writing; RAFTs)
· Using Projects and Performances to Check for Understanding (e.g. Project-Based Learning; Reader's Theater; Multimedia Presentations; Graphic Organizers)
