Character Education: Understanding Girls' Friendships and Conflicts
Date: Thursday, October 30, 2008
Time: 3:30 p.m.. - 5:00 p.m. ET
Target Grade Levels: Grades K-6 Educators
Brought to you by the National Liberty Museum! Educators are increasingly aware of and concerned about the impact of cliques and girls' unique ways of dealing with friendships, conflict and aggression on classroom dynamics, social interactions, and girls' social and emotional development. This presentation looks at psychological research, popular media portrayals, and teachers' experiences in examining gender differences in girls' and boys' friendships, schoolwork and play patterns. The implications for conflict resolution are explored as well as the developmental differences in expressions of anger and the roles girls assume. Character education strategies will be presented for educators to use in helping girls develop healthy relationships and prevent relational aggression. Writing Workshop with Author Katherine Ayres
Date: November 20, 2008
Time: 3:30 p.m.. - 5:00 p.m. ET
Target Grade Levels: PreK and Primary School Educators
Many teachers who feel very confident in their teaching skills in reading and pre-reading have less comfort in the teaching of writing. The goal of this program for teachers is to increase their proficiency as writers and thereby increase their confidence in the teaching of writing. This will be accomplished using the workshop method, in which teachers will be presented with a number of writing prompts and activities, all of which work well with children. The teachers will then share their fun with words, and discuss ways to increase the writing literacy of their students.. More information: http://www.magpi.net/programs/ayres_pd.html
