Program Description
The Early Intervention in Reading Program is a daily, 20 minute supplemental small group reading program that helps struggling first and second graders learn to read and helps to build fluency and comprehension in grade 3 and 4 students who need more reading support. The kindergarten program helps students develop phonemic awareness and emergent literacy skills as they interact with literature. The EIR program is delivered through a multimedia Internet program with support from an EIR trainer. Monthly staff development sessions help teachers refine the coaching they provide their students. This coaching helps children learn successful decoding and comprehension strategies. As teachers monitor children's use of strategies, the students gain confidence in their ability to read independently. The EIR instructional program can be readily integrated into classroom activities.
Program Format
The program covers a complete school year. There are 44 interactive modules that are used at different times during the year. These modules deliver an interactive, multi-media presentation of the EIR program, including video clips of effective practice and large and small group activities for participants. Each module will take 20-30 minutes to complete. Modules contain text to read, audio to provide further explanation, video clips to illustrate effective teaching techniques, and downloadable teaching materials. In addition to working through the modules during the monthly meetings, teachers discuss their experiences using EIR and share video clips of their own teaching of EIR. During each monthly, 2 hour meeting, the group also raises questions and concerns with a certified EIR trainer via conference call.
