FREE Photographs as Primary Sources: Soil Conservation Service

Join the National Archives at Fort Worth for a professional development program exploring the use of photographs as primary sources. This program highlights photographs of the Soil Conservation Service from the 1930s to 1970s. Teachers will view and discuss images that will enhance students’ critical thinking skills about environmental science and American history. An overview of the National Archives and the Soil Conservation Service will be included.

Teachers' Domain: Public Television's Free Library of Primetime Resources
Teachers' Domain is a collection of over 1,000 free media resources taken from public television's best programming: NOVA, Frontline, Design Squad, American Experience, and more. But most teachers do not know it exists!  Gary Greenberg, an education staffer at ThinkTV/CET, will demonstrate Teachers' Domain and help teachers apply it to topics in science, STEM, history and other content areas.

David and Kayleen Explore Sound - STEM Lesson for grades 1-3
Students use the Engineering Design Process to investigate factors influencing the perceived volume of a sound.  Students will design and build ear protection after they explore the absorptive properties of different materials and their effects on recorded decibel readings.  Students redesign their ear protection prototype in to produce a design that absorbs even more sound.

She will address important questions including: why should comprehension be given priority in today's literacy curriculum?; how is the Comprehension First proposal related to the new Common Core Standards that have been adopted by most states?; what are the key features of comprehensive instruction that is based on research conclusions?

Free Educational Resources from PBS
In this session presented by Think TV PBS, educators will learn about the quality, free resources available from PBS, including PBS Teachers, Teacher's Domain, and Ohio PBS member-station content on Ohio iTunes U. Elementary through High School teachers will learn how to access, organize and integrate these technology resources, which include video and multi-media learning modules, teacher guides, lesson plans, and activities across the content areas. Teachers will also learn best practices for using media in the classroom.

Exploring Wind Speed - STEM Lesson for grades 3-4
Students will observe wind in nature and measure wind speed using a self-constructed anemometer and Beaufort scale.  Students will also design build and use a kite to test the wind's ability to do work (e.g. lift the kite).  Students will use age appropriate math skills to record and graph their findings.

Connect2Texas provider Cook Children's Medical Center is offering a FREE professional development for school nurses.

Description: Injury is the most significant public health threat to children in the US, with 1 in 5 children injured each year. In total, 14 million children less than 15 years of age are injured each year, resulting in 9 million hospital visits and 250,000 hospital admissions (Inj Prev 2006; 12:212-218). Research has shown that trauma significantly increases the risk of physical illness, mental health problems, poor school performance, and difficulties with social relationships and behaviors (http://www.nctsnet.org/). Join Lisa Pool, CCLS, for a 1.25 hour program designed to give school nurses an understanding of what trauma means to a child and some of the common developmental reactions. This program will also identify influences affecting the trauma response, techniques to help the traumatized child and their parents, and available resources and community referrals.

Accreditation
Cook Children's Medical Center is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

This activity provides 1.25 contact hours. You must attend the activity in its entirety and complete and return the evaluation tool.

Cook Children’s Medical Center is approved as a provider of continuing education for Licensed Professional Counselor’s by the LPC Board of Examiners for the State of Texas (Provider #1022) and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists by the LMFT Board of Examiners for the State of Texas (Provider # 385). Do you need a refresher course on how to use and implement your Flip Video camcorder in your classroom?  Join us to review the basics, re-examine the software, and learn some tips and tricks for using the camcorder with students.  Participants will also gain some ideas for implementing the Flip Video camera in their content curriculum and have the opportunity to share their ideas with other attendees.
