Six Spectacular Biography Resources For All Curricular Areas From INFOhio

October 1, 2008, 3:30-4:30 p.m.Come explore the powerful new biography resource, Biography Reference Bank, with more than 550,000 biographies of people from all time periods, including today. This tool also provides thousands of photos, links to numerous full-text magazine articles and abstracts, and even primary source documents from Speeches of the American Presidents.We will also highlight resources from the new World Book Web and SchoolRooms and rediscover biographies from some other INFOhio resources such as SIRS Discoverer, the Digital Video Collection, and EBSCOhost. To top it off, we will share resources for promoting biographies and biography assignments. Solving Equations with Manipulatives: Hands On Equations
The purpose of this overview of Hands-on Equations will allow you to decide if you want to incorporate Hands-on Equations into your math curriculum. Teacher training is provided by the Muskingum Valley ESC. Hands-on Equations is a visual and kinesthetic teaching method that empowers teachers to successfully present algebraic concept to students in grades 3-8. The program provides students with an intuitive understanding of the most fundamental algebraic concepts. Many of the Ohio Academic Content Standards are covered in Hands-on Equations.

CEUs are available to those who attend. The cost for each hour long PD session is $75.00 per site (no limit to those attending from that site).

Getting Comfortable with Pre-Assessment
Not sure you’re reaching all of the students in your classroom? Concerned that while some students are falling behind, others are going unchallenged? Learn how to effectively use ongoing assessment in your classroom to monitor student progress before, during and after instruction. This interactive session will offer formal and informal tools for gathering student data to use in lesson and unit planning. Participants will also receive “do-it-tomorrow” assessment strategies that do not require “paper-pencil” testing and grading.

Strategies for Using OAT and OGT Vocabulary
How does effective vocabulary teaching and learning impact student understanding of grade-level indicators and benchmarks? Are you familiar with the vocabulary that students will encounter on state achievement tests? Whether you are a classroom teacher or building administrator, it is crucial for educators to understand the impact that vocabulary usage has on student’s academic content knowledge and skills. This training focuses on standard-based strategies that help teachers implement indicator vocabulary terms, indicator verb phrases, and testing terms into daily instruction.
The use of MVESCs “Indicator Sentence Strips” will also be demonstrated for building student vocabulary.

Diabetes & Nutrition from Cook Children's Medical Center

Obesity has become a nationwide problem among our children. The considerable growth of childhood obesity has led to the rising rate of childhood diabetes. This 1.5 hour program is designed to give school nurses an understanding of the symptoms, causes and consequences of childhood diabetes, as well as a detailed understanding of how to provide nutritionally balanced meals for children with diabetes. In part one of this program, Maura Lindenfeld, RN, MSN, CPNP will define type 1 and type 2 diabetes and outline their differences. Maura will also identify the goals of therapy for type 1 diabetes and list ways for preventing type 2. In the second part, Ashley Cunningham RD, LD, CDE explain carbohydrate counting as it relates to type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Cook Children’s Medical Center is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Editing Audio is Easy and Free
with Audacity Audacity is a free, easy-to-use audio editor and recorder. In the classroom Audacity can be used by students and teachers to support a wide range of speaking and listening activities such as questioning and interviewing, oral storytelling, adding narration to a multimedia project, learning vocabulary and foreign language, creating radio broadcasts or podcasts, and recording and playing back musical compositions. Learn the basics of how to capture audio, edit audio, and work with sound files.
