Please join the TCHESC on December 4th at 3:15 for an interactive Best
Practice Video Conference covering the method and mechanics of offering
a foreign language from a High School to a Middle School. Dover High has

year. Join us as the teachers and school officials explain how this
works and what benefits the district has noticed as a result of this
teaching method. The cost is $60 for non-consortium members and there is
no charge for TEC-LINK member schools. Please register by visiting
http://www.blogger.com/www.tchesc.org and clicking on VC scheduler. Contact hours are available

Genas: Creating the Desire to Learn

Educator Jaime Escalante

Topic: Genas: Creating the Desire to Learn”

Date: Monday, October 29, 2007

Time: 1:00-2:00 p.m.

Transmission Modes: NOTA, eTech Ohio IP and ATM networks,
Cleveland V-Stations

Jaime Escalante was born in La Paz, Bolivia, to two teachers who worked in a small Aymara Indian village. After 9 years of teaching in Bolivia, Escalante moved to the United States and worked as a busboy, a cook, and an electronics factory technician while earning teaching credentials and a degree in mathematics.
He is the host of an instructional television series on PBS, "Futures," which introduces students to a variety of math and science-based careers. It is the most popular classroom program in the history of PBS and has been honored with more than 50 awards from educational and professional organizations, including the highest honor in the broadcasting field, the George Foster Peabody Award.
A 1988 book, "Escalante: The Best Teacher in America," provided an account of his life. The 1988 film, "Stand and Deliver," illustrated his 1982 struggle. His students tested so high in the rigorous Advanced Placement exams that they were suspected of cheating by the Educational Testing Service, which didn't believe that poor barrio students had the ability to pass any college- level test. He believes in helping students find in themselves genas, a desire that must emerge from within, which allows them to overcome all barriers

Schools interested in participating in this educational opportunity should contact John Ramicone at 216-916-6360 or john.ramicone@ideastream.org by October 24th. Scheduling is on a first call basis.

A program fee of $75.00 will be charged to schools not in the NOTA member districts. Please process a purchase order to WVIZ/PBS Distance Learning, c/o John Ramicone, 1375 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland 44115 and fax a copy or the p.o. number to 216-916-6361.
